How to Identify Real vs Fake Meteorite?

Meteorite refers to natural space rocks that have traveled through Earth's atmosphere and landed on the surface. Among them, those containing large amounts of iron-nickel metal are called Iron Meteorites.

However, many magnetic, dark-colored, or metallic-luster minerals on the market are also marketed as "meteorites." Being attracted to a magnet does not directly prove that an object is a meteorite.

What Are the Characteristics of a Real Meteorite?

Contains Iron, Nickel, and Other Metals

Iron meteorites are primarily composed of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni), so they usually have a clear metallic feel and high density.

But remember: magnetic does not equal meteorite.

How to Spot Fake Meteorites?

The Unique Texture of Meteorites

Genuine iron meteorites may show a naturally formed crystal pattern called the Widmanstätten Pattern.
